1. What is the Suzuki Method? How is it different from other, more traditional, methods?
The Suzuki Method, or “Mother Tongue” method of talent education is based in the way a child acquires
his or her native language and dialect. Suzuki reasoned that all children have intelligence and can learn because all children
acquire the ability to speak and communicate without “formal” training in their own language.
It is for this reason that the Suzuki method is a bit different than traditional music instruction. Some of the differences
include early beginning(ages 3-7), daily parental involvement, daily listening to pieces being studied, repetition and games,
encouragement, learning with other children, strong emphasis on beautiful tone, and delayed reading.
Suzuki
Children play on classical guitars, nylon stringed instruments. They learn the classical literature. However, at my studio
I also enhance this with a larger chord vocabulary and some instruction in improvisation to make for a more fully equipped
musician.
NO! I love the Suzuki movement and all that it is accomplishing.
I also play and enjoy many styles of music. I frequently play jazz and finger style guitar as a soloist or in an ensemble.
I teach all the fundamentals of pop guitar. If your interest lies in rock, country, blues, praise and worship, etc come on
in! I can help you.
I teach ages 3 to adult; preschool through retirement ages.
You are invited to come and observe a lesson. If you like what
you see and hear, we can meet and talk about instrument choices, musical interests, etc. and schedule a regular lesson time.
Parent Education class is where I teach parents of Suzuki students to
be the home teacher. You only need to do it if your child is ages 3-7 (required). You may want to do it if your child is a
bit older and studying the Suzuki method (optional).
People not studying the Suzuki method do
not need to do it.
We think so! Several
of my students do come from other communities. Some as far away as Rochester(about 45 miles). Some come every week. Some come
every other week and take a longer lesson. We are flexible and will work with you to make it as convenient and worth your
while as possible.
Still wondering? Call or email me and set up a time you can observe a lesson.
It’s free!
I would have to see the child and the guitar
to answer this. Guitars are a little like shoes. You need the right size and style depending on the person and activity.
TIP: If you do not have a guitar and want to get started on lessons, talk to me before buying anything. I can help
you get exactly what you need.
For the most part no. I do have a link on this
web site to Sheet Music Plus where you can purchase most of the books you would need. They would be delivered right to your door.
